Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown line the Houston Ship Channel east of the city, along SH 225 and I-10. The channel is lined with petrochemical plants and port terminals, which makes the area a major employment center. It also holds the San Jacinto Battleground, where Texas won its independence in 1836, plus nature preserves along Galveston Bay.

Pasadena, the largest of the three cities, stretches south from the Ship Channel toward Clear Lake. San Jacinto College's Central campus is in Pasadena, and Armand Bayou Nature Center sits on its southern side along Bay Area Boulevard. Deer Park lies east along SH 225, next to the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. Baytown, across the Ship Channel to the northeast, sits on I-10 and Galveston Bay and connects to La Porte by the Fred Hartman Bridge.

On our site, the area covers ZIP codes 77502, 77504, 77536 and 77521. The Census figures below use the City of Pasadena, from the American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates (2020–2024).

The apartment landscape

  • Garden-style communities are the main type, many built from the 1960s through the 1980s along SH 225, Spencer Highway, Fairmont Parkway and Garth Road. Renovation levels vary widely.
  • Newer communities, fewer in number, along Beltway 8, Fairmont Parkway and the I-10 corridor in Baytown, with resort-style pools and garages.
  • Single-family homes and duplexes for rent throughout the established neighborhoods.

The Census reports a median gross rent of $1,213 a month for the City of Pasadena (ACS 2024 5-year), the lowest median among the areas we cover, and about 46% of its occupied homes were renter-occupied. Gross rent is the Census measure of contract rent plus estimated utilities, and it covers every rented home in the ZIP, from older duplexes to new towers, so treat it as a baseline rather than a quote for any one building. Tips for renting in Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown

  • Locate near your shift. If you work at a plant or terminal, test the drive at your shift-change times. Bridge and freeway traffic around the Ship Channel can vary a lot by hour.
  • See the actual unit. In older communities, ask which units are renovated and what the price difference is, and tour the unit you would rent.
  • Read the flood disclosure. Texas Property Code §92.0135 requires landlords to tell you in writing whether a unit is in a 100-year floodplain and whether it has flooded in the past five years. Areas near the bay and bayous deserve a close read.
  • Consider flood coverage. Standard renters insurance generally excludes flood; ask your insurer about separate coverage.
  • Get the full monthly cost, including water, sewer, trash, pet rent and parking.
  • Listen for rail and truck traffic. Freight lines and truck routes serve the industrial corridors. Visit at different times of day and ask which units face the busiest roads or tracks.
  • Read concessions as effective rent, and ask which lease terms qualify.
