West Houston's Energy Corridor stretches along I-10 west of Beltway 8, home to the headquarters and regional offices of several major energy companies. CityCentre, a walkable mixed-use district, sits at its eastern gateway, and the Briar Forest neighborhoods spread south toward Westheimer. If you work on the west side, this area lets you live close to the office while staying near trails, restaurants and shopping.
The area at a glance
The Energy Corridor District is a management district along I-10 that includes ConocoPhillips' headquarters and BP's Westlake campus among its employers. CityCentre, which opened in 2009 on the site of the former Town & Country Mall at I-10 and the Beltway, combines shops, restaurants, a hotel, offices and residences around a central plaza. Briar Forest is a largely residential area between the Energy Corridor and Westheimer. Much of the office space sits on landscaped campuses along Eldridge Parkway, Park Ten Boulevard and the I-10 frontage roads. To the west, the Addicks and Barker reservoirs, including George Bush Park, form a large band of open land.
On our site, the area covers ZIP codes 77077, 77079 and 77024. The Census figures below use ZCTA 77079, from the American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates (2020–2024).
Getting around
Walk Score rates the Energy Corridor 46 out of 100 ("Car-Dependent"), with a Transit Score of 26 and a Bike Score of 49 at the time of writing. CityCentre is the exception: its blocks are designed for walking, so buildings within or beside it can handle many errands on foot.
I-10 (the Katy Freeway) is the backbone, with managed express lanes heading east toward downtown and west toward Katy. Beltway 8 and the Westpark Tollway connect south and north. METRO's Addicks Park & Ride, on Old Katy Road near I-10, runs commuter buses to downtown. The Census puts mean travel time to work at 24.7 minutes for ZCTA 77079.
What's nearby
Parks and trails. Terry Hershey Park follows Buffalo Bayou with about 11 miles of wooded hike-and-bike trails. George Bush Park, a large county park in the Barker Reservoir, has trails, sports fields and a shooting range. Ray Miller Park on Eldridge Parkway is a smaller neighborhood option.
Shopping and dining. CityCentre's plaza hosts shops, restaurants, a hotel and seasonal events, and Memorial City Mall is just east on I-10. Along Westheimer, the Briar Forest side has its own string of grocery stores and shopping centers for everyday errands.
Food. Talespin, a NeoTexan pizza restaurant on the Katy Freeway, and Sayad Mediterranean Kitchen, a halal Middle Eastern restaurant on Eldridge Parkway, both made the Houston Chronicle's 2025 Top 100. The Capital Grille at CityCentre appears in the Chronicle's guide to Houston steakhouses.
The apartment landscape
- Mid-rise buildings in and around CityCentre and along the I-10 corridor, with garages, pools and walkable access to shops.
- Garden-style communities along Eldridge, Dairy Ashford, Briar Forest and Westheimer, often with mature trees and surface parking.
- Townhomes and single-family homes for rent in the Briar Forest and Memorial-area neighborhoods, leased by individual owners.
The Census reports a median gross rent of $1,615 a month for ZCTA 77079 (ACS 2024 5-year), and about 52% of its occupied homes were renter-occupied. Gross rent is the Census measure of contract rent plus estimated utilities, and it covers every rented home in the ZIP, from older duplexes to new towers, so treat it as a baseline rather than a quote for any one building. Tips for renting in the Energy Corridor
- Live on your side of I-10. Crossing the freeway at rush hour can add time. If your office is north of I-10, look north first, and the same for the south side.
- Read the flood disclosure. Buffalo Bayou and the Addicks and Barker reservoirs shape this area's drainage. Texas Property Code §92.0135 requires landlords to tell you in writing whether a unit is in a 100-year floodplain and whether it has flooded in the past five years. Read it closely.
- Ask about lease length. If your job assignment has a fixed end date, ask which lease terms are available and how pricing changes between them.
- Get the full monthly cost. Ask for base rent plus parking, pet rent, trash and utilities billed by the property.
- Compare effective rent. If a building advertises a concession, ask how it is applied and which units and terms qualify.
- Start 30 to 60 days out so the building can quote and hold a specific unit.
